Severe Weather Season kicks off this Friday!

Henry and Reed have both been indicating that the Severe Weather season is starting to kick off this Friday. Although dew points are still on the low side, the winds coming from the Gulf of Mexico will bring enough moist air to initiate severe storms. Reed is even bringing the newly designed Dominator there! You know Reed, if he is this pumped up about this, there must be something going to happen! Henry has mentioned that the NAM model has been doing a better job modeling severe storms than the GFS so far, so I am including both for your comparison.

I don't know about you all, but my adrenaline is starting to pump. Interesting this is happening on Easter weekend, there have been known outbreaks happen over Easter weekend.

Quiet Severe Weather Season so far and etc.....

Temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico remain on the cool side for this time of year, keeping dew points down. Jym Ganahl has mentioned so far, 2010 is the fourth quietest tornado season ever (thanks Snowman!). Our friend Henry Margusity from Accuweather.com has been saying he does not expect the severe weather season to ramp up until May and has indicated the severe weather will be East of KS, OK, and TX. This would put severe weather further East than normal, into parts of AR, MS, MO, TN, KY, and most of IL and IN. Henry had mentioned he is working on an article about this season's severe weather, so I will hold off further comment until then. Well, just one  :). He WAS right about predicting the snow storm tracks this past Winter!

Today there is an article on ONN.com about  Severe Weather Awareness Week: Ohio's Last F5 Tornado .Follow the link for the complete story. The story also includes links to stories for two other tornadoes.

Attended Spotter training this past weekend and it was informative. AJ Smith from 10tv was there and I even heard the Weathermania crew was on television! There is an Advanced Spotter Training class being offered in Cincinnati on April 10. I think we are going to wait until next year to attend this class.

Well, that's all for now Weathermainiacs!

Weathermania site update

Henry Margusity at Accuweather mentioned last week that the Gulf of Mexico water temperatures are still on the cool side. This keeps dew points down and inhibits thunderstorm and tornado outbreaks. I have temporarily replaced the Weather Channel Severe Weather Alerts map with their Sea Surface Temperatures map. This may be found on my 'Home" radar page at http://johnsweathermania.webs.com/

Cha-Cha-Changes!

Just some general musings on weather items. This past week saw the weather starting to change to a more Spring time pattern. It was officially time to put the snow blower in hibernation (sorry Snowman!)

The first real Spring severe weather outbreak occurred this past Wednesday the 10th. It felt good virtual storm chasing again! There were only five tornadoes reported. As I understand it, Henry Margusity of Accuweather commented that the temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico are still on the cool side. Because of this the dew points did not quite get high enough to initiate more of an outbreak. Look for this to turn around next month into early May. (If not, it’s going to be a  loooooooooooooooong severe weather season!).  To help ease the pain, I bought all three seasons of Storm Chasers :)

Daylight Savings Time (DST) begins this weekend. When reading statements from NWS and SPC, this means we will be -4z time instead of -5z time. Also keep this in mind looking at the forecast models. Don’t know about you, but this is just what I need is to lose another hour of sleep! For some strange reason I am never able to get to bed an hour early like everyone else :)

I am getting jazzed about Spotter Training class next weekend. Not only that, my brother is trying to talk me into getting my Ham radio license. We all know what that means…Can live storm chasing be far behind?

Lastly, keep an eye on March 21st through March 23rd. The GFS model is indicating rain these days with some possible snow overnight Sunday night/Monday morning. It doesn’t appear to be anything major. While this is about nine to ten days out, the models have been fairly consistent.

Okay Weathermainiacs, Ciao!
