We may have severe storms this Saturday - May 1st

Good afternoon Weathermaniacs! It seems more certain we will get strong, possible severe storms tomorrow. Here is what I am picking up from NWS, Jym, and CH10. We will have rain tomorrow morning, and they are saying the strong storms will arrive late afternoon/early evening.

For that to happen, look for the following scenario: After the morning rain stops, the clouds clear heating up the atmosphere to make the environment unstable when the LOW approaches. DEW POINTS, DEW POINTS, DEW POINTS! Check our dew points. We need dew points 60 or above for severe storms. The more above 60, the more severe.

I will be following tomorrow's events from the Weathermania Command Center. Please feel free to call or text me at 614-545-8032, I will also be on Twitter (JohnForesman). Look forward to hearing from you!

Sever Weather Season Kicks Off For REAL

Hi Weathermaniacs! This is going to be a quick blog. Yesterday saw the first major tornado outbreak for 2010. At this time there were a reported 30 tornadoes yesterday. I had a highly successful Virtual Storm Chase day. Saw three live tornadoes on te ground. One I watched crossing the road. You could see the rotation! Talk about insane. The other two were huge rain wrapped tornadoes.

Also followed Reed in the Dominator. There was a bar across his feed that said discovery.com/stormchasers, so I wonder if he was out shooting film for the upcoming season of Stormchasers. Pretty cool I think!

As I am writing this, this is day two of the outbreak, and there is another scheduled tomorrow so I look to be busy following all the action. Let me hear from you and your take!

Also, we may have some severe storms here in Columbus land tomorrow and/or tomorrow night so heads up!

Ciao! for now.

Last Night's Storms and 'Nados!

Experienced some excitement during last night's severe storms that rolled through Central Ohio. This happened sometime between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm. I noticed what appeared to be a hook echo approximately SE of West Jefferson. The track took it NE between Hilliard and Columbus. Shortly thereafter a TVS signature showed on the GRlevel3 radar. By this time the thunderstorm was producing pea-sized hail. My car was parked outside during the hail storm. I have not been able to determine yet if there is any damage to the car. In this type of storm, what's the next step? You got it, we lost power (bye bye radar)! By the time power was restored, a short time later, the TVS signature was gone. There was no tornado warning issued for this event and neither Channel 4 or Channel 10 interrupted normal broadcasting. So it was over as quickly as it started. Not sure if we had brief rotation or the hail triggered the TVS signature.

Speaking of tornadoes, this is Tornado Week on The Weather Channel. The have new episodes of "Storm Stories" and "Storm Riders". Meanwhile, I am going to have Johnsweathermania's version of "Tornado Week". Recorded coverage of the May 3, 1999 tornado that hit Oklahoma City. The classic movies "Tornado" and "Twister" (I would enjoy these movies much more if they would have left out all the 'Global Warming' crap!!). New this year are all three seasons of "Storm Chasers" ! Hopefully, this will carry me over until the severe season kick into full gear! The Gulf of Mexico seems to be warming up and Dew Points are now starting rise so it should be soon, as a matter of fact, Henry says there will be severe storms over the next few days. That's all for now Ciao!

Email Updates - NOAA - National Weather Service

Email Updates - NOAA - National Weather Service

Email Updates
The National Weather Service (NWS) is proposing an experimental use of email updates to provide NWS information.
To provide this, the services of GovDelivery, Inc. has been procured. GovDelivery provides similar services for a number of other government entities and offers unique ability to allow NWS customers to not only subscribe to NWS bulletins, but to also learn about email updates available from agencies with missions related to NWS.
Please refer to the GovDelivery privacy policy for details on their privacy policy.
This experiment is intended to explore methods to increase dissemination and availability of NWS information and to allow consolidation of several existing email dissemination systems and reduce duplication of effort within the agency.
Sign up for NWS alerts and updates by email  (Note, emails will be sent from the email address nws.noaa@service.govdelivery.com - please set your email spam filter to accept emails from this address to ensure timely delivery).
You are encouraged to complete a short survey on this format
The available updates and bulletins include:
  • National Hurricane Center:
    • Hurricane, marine, and tropical weather forecasts and advisories
  • Storm Prediction Center
    • Severe weather watches and status updates
    • Severe weather mesoscale discussions
    • Convective Outlooks (Days 1, 2, and 3, and Days 4 through 8)
    • Fire Weather Outlooks
  • Colorado Basin River Forecast Center
    • Water supply forecasts
This list will be updated as more bulletins are added during the course of the experimental period. Severe weather watches, warniongs, and advisories will be added later this spring.

Severe Weather Season kicks off this Friday!

Henry and Reed have both been indicating that the Severe Weather season is starting to kick off this Friday. Although dew points are still on the low side, the winds coming from the Gulf of Mexico will bring enough moist air to initiate severe storms. Reed is even bringing the newly designed Dominator there! You know Reed, if he is this pumped up about this, there must be something going to happen! Henry has mentioned that the NAM model has been doing a better job modeling severe storms than the GFS so far, so I am including both for your comparison.

I don't know about you all, but my adrenaline is starting to pump. Interesting this is happening on Easter weekend, there have been known outbreaks happen over Easter weekend.

Quiet Severe Weather Season so far and etc.....

Temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico remain on the cool side for this time of year, keeping dew points down. Jym Ganahl has mentioned so far, 2010 is the fourth quietest tornado season ever (thanks Snowman!). Our friend Henry Margusity from Accuweather.com has been saying he does not expect the severe weather season to ramp up until May and has indicated the severe weather will be East of KS, OK, and TX. This would put severe weather further East than normal, into parts of AR, MS, MO, TN, KY, and most of IL and IN. Henry had mentioned he is working on an article about this season's severe weather, so I will hold off further comment until then. Well, just one  :). He WAS right about predicting the snow storm tracks this past Winter!

Today there is an article on ONN.com about  Severe Weather Awareness Week: Ohio's Last F5 Tornado .Follow the link for the complete story. The story also includes links to stories for two other tornadoes.

Attended Spotter training this past weekend and it was informative. AJ Smith from 10tv was there and I even heard the Weathermania crew was on television! There is an Advanced Spotter Training class being offered in Cincinnati on April 10. I think we are going to wait until next year to attend this class.

Well, that's all for now Weathermainiacs!

Weathermania site update

Henry Margusity at Accuweather mentioned last week that the Gulf of Mexico water temperatures are still on the cool side. This keeps dew points down and inhibits thunderstorm and tornado outbreaks. I have temporarily replaced the Weather Channel Severe Weather Alerts map with their Sea Surface Temperatures map. This may be found on my 'Home" radar page at http://johnsweathermania.webs.com/

Cha-Cha-Changes!

Just some general musings on weather items. This past week saw the weather starting to change to a more Spring time pattern. It was officially time to put the snow blower in hibernation (sorry Snowman!)

The first real Spring severe weather outbreak occurred this past Wednesday the 10th. It felt good virtual storm chasing again! There were only five tornadoes reported. As I understand it, Henry Margusity of Accuweather commented that the temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico are still on the cool side. Because of this the dew points did not quite get high enough to initiate more of an outbreak. Look for this to turn around next month into early May. (If not, it’s going to be a  loooooooooooooooong severe weather season!).  To help ease the pain, I bought all three seasons of Storm Chasers :)

Daylight Savings Time (DST) begins this weekend. When reading statements from NWS and SPC, this means we will be -4z time instead of -5z time. Also keep this in mind looking at the forecast models. Don’t know about you, but this is just what I need is to lose another hour of sleep! For some strange reason I am never able to get to bed an hour early like everyone else :)

I am getting jazzed about Spotter Training class next weekend. Not only that, my brother is trying to talk me into getting my Ham radio license. We all know what that means…Can live storm chasing be far behind?

Lastly, keep an eye on March 21st through March 23rd. The GFS model is indicating rain these days with some possible snow overnight Sunday night/Monday morning. It doesn’t appear to be anything major. While this is about nine to ten days out, the models have been fairly consistent.

Okay Weathermainiacs, Ciao!
